Kelly Morton DNP, MSN, RN '04
Kelly Morton DNP, MSN, RN '04 earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at Tech in 2004. During her time at WVU Tech, Morton was an active member of the Golden Bear Softball Team and the Student Nurses Association (SNA).
After graduation, she began her career as a registered nurse at Montgomery General Hospital, where she developed a strong commitment to quality patient care. Over the years, her passion for nursing evolved into a deep dedication to education and mentorship, especially for new nursing graduates.
Recognizing the power of education in shaping future nurses, Morton transitioned into higher education in 2014 as the Coordinator for the Medical Assistant Program at BridgeValley Community and Technical College. This role allowed her to witness firsthand the transformative power of teaching and inspired her to pursue a career focused on education.
In 2016, Morton earned a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Nursing Education and Leadership from Capella University. She then joined the West Virginia University School of Nursing teaching in the BSN program. Through roles as academic counselor, course coordinator, and advisor for the Student Nurses Association, she’s consistently demonstrated a commitment to empowering students and guiding them toward their goals. She also has served as an advocate and leader for initiatives such as the Southern West Virginia Junior Nurse Academy and the Jump Start Summer Bridge Nursing Program, both of which aim to provide students with the resources and confidence needed to succeed in the nursing profession.
In the summer of 2024, Morton earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Capella University, further expanding her expertise in nursing practice and leadership.
Currently, Morton works at the WVU School of Nursing Charleston campus, where she continues to inspire and educate the next generation of nurses.
Throughout her career, Morton has been recognized for her leadership in nursing. In 2017, she received the 40 Under 40 Nursing Leadership Award, a testament to her ongoing contributions to the field. In 2022, she was honored with the Spirit of Nursing Award from Dr. Tara Hulsey, Dean of the WVU School of Nursing, acknowledging her exceptional dedication and passion for nursing education.
Morton is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National League for Nursing (NLN), Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the West Virginia Organization of Nursing Leadership (WVONL), and the American Nurses Association (ANA).
She is also a published author, having contributed to publications that focus on nursing education. Her passion for nursing extends beyond the classroom and is dedicated to the betterment of the nursing profession.
Morton believes that nursing is not just a job, but a calling to care for others and make a positive impact on the health and well-being of communities. She is a strong advocate for the power of education in shaping compassionate, competent nurses who can meet the challenges of an ever-evolving healthcare system.
Outside of her professional career, Morton is active in her community and church. She is married to a fellow WVU Tech alum Jeff, and they have two daughters, Madison and Brooklyn. She is passionate about the outdoors and finds joy in the beauty of nature. She also enjoys sporting events and cheering at her daughters' games.
