Taylor Miltenberger is a 2016 graduate of biology at WVU Tech. After watching TV shows such as House, Taylor thought she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. However, after taking several classes with Dr. Deb Beutler, she discovered her interests were in a different field.

“I had the opportunity to take several of Dr. Beutler’s animal and ecology classes. It was these courses which changed my focus from the medical field to animal and environmental biology,” Taylor said.

When asked why she chose WVU Tech to purse her degree, Taylor stated it was because of the location and the size of campus.

“I liked that Tech was close to home but far enough away. Coming from a small town, Tech’s small campus meant I knew I wouldn’t get lost in the crowd,” she said.

As a student, Taylor was a member of the Biology Club, Hall Council and the Student Government Association. She served as a resident advisor. She was also a member of the cheerleading squad during her freshman year.

Upon graduating, Taylor worked for a year as a histology technician before pursuing her master’s in zoology from Manchester Metropolitan University. Taylor completed her advanced degree and accepted a position at Potomac State College as a professional science tutor and adjunct professor.

Her passion to share her knowledge has been evident since a young age.

“I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was a small child. It’s very rewarding to watch a student finally understand the material and become excited when they learn something new. It’s like a light bulb switches on and their face lights up,” she said.

Taylor also provided some advice for those preparing to entering the field of biology.

“Take the time to volunteer and intern for as many opportunities that provide hands on experience. Don’t be afraid to branch out and try different areas you may not have considered. Most importantly, view every experience as an opportunity to expand your network which can help you in finding a career,” she said.
